RAZIONALE
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a multifaceted neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorder with marked heterogeneity in clinical presentation, progression, and treatment response. Recent advances in genetics, immunology, neuropathology, and neuroimaging have reshaped our understanding of the disease, emphasizing its biological continuum and the interplay between inflammation, degeneration, and CNS repair mechanisms. This 26th Advanced Course, Magnetic Resonance Techniques in Multiple Sclerosis, aims to integrate cutting-edge biological insights with state-of-the-art imaging and biomarker methodologies to inform a more precise and personalized approach to MS diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy.
The program opens with a deep dive into the immunopathological basis of MS, encompassing genetic susceptibility, environmental triggers, immune dysregulation, and CNS compartmentalization—including emerging roles for the glymphatic system. This biological lens sets the foundation for reevaluating traditional clinical phenotypes and exploring early-stage and age-related manifestations of MS.
On the second day, attention shifts to advanced imaging techniques and fluid biomarkers, highlighting their role in delineating inflammatory activity, microstructural damage, and neuroplasticity. These modalities are increasingly pivotal in identifying subclinical disease activity and guiding therapeutic decisions. The final session focuses on translating this biologically anchored knowledge into clinical practice, with emphasis on novel therapeutic strategies and biologically informed outcome measures.
By bridging molecular biology with clinical neuroimaging, this course fosters a more integrative and dynamic model of MS care, aligning scientific discovery with real-world patient management and advancing the goal of personalized medicine in MS.
